The Cliff House is a contemporary house design which is located on an extremely steep site within Cape Town. The residential design has expansive views of the surrounds with more than an 180° view from the entertainment areas.
From the onset, the brief from the client was to design a contemporary dwelling which maximises the use of a very difficult site.
Due to the steepness of the site the house is comprised of three levels, each having its own purpose. Bedrooms are located on the uppermost floor while living spaces form the central section of the house. A cinema room along with staff quarters are located on the lowest level. The house, although being comprised of three levels, appear as a double storey when viewed from the street.
The Garages & Front entrance are located at street level but, due to the drastic slope, a large portion of the house is suspended on concrete columns. These columns, along with the horizontal projections of the contemporary design, give the house the illusion of hovering above the lush natural landscape it is located in. In addition, a flat section of lawn has been created on the street side leading from the lounge.
Large sections of glass are used throughout the design to frame the panoramic views from the various spaces. Concrete cantilevers and deep verandas’ provide sheltered spaces for entertainment areas whilst minimising the heat gain through the fenestration elements. Finally, timber screening elements are used to provide privacy on the various levels.
This design is one of the proud projects undertaken by Gottsmann Architects in Cape Town
